Wreck of the Umbria
13th November
1898
The Umbria of Hull was a steam smack on
passage from Orkney with 150 kits aboard.
She ran ashore in dense fog on Blea Wyke Point
on the Saturday night. The Robin Hood's Bay
lifeboat travelled five miles and took off
six of the crew. The master, mate and chief
engineer remained on board but came ashore
at low tide on Sunday. She was badly holed
and stripped during the following week.
