The Tyne
11th
December 1874
In a snowstorm the screw steamer "Tyne"
of South Shields ran aground in the Bay. Coastguards
discovered her in the morning, and soon had
their rocket apparatus set up. Communication
was speedily effected but the ships crew refused
to leave as the tide was ebbing. At low tide
they were able to walk off and inspect the
damage. Although in a precarious position
she only had a broken stern plate and a hole
in the ballast tank. The Tynes Commander
Mr Andrew blamed a faulty compass for the
incident. It is expected that she will be
refloated on the spring tides.
