Thrift

Jan/Feb? 1958

In dense fog the 648 ton steamer Thrift, of Aberdeen, on voyage from Ghent in ballast went ashore at Ness. Whitby Lifeboat was launched and a rescue team from Bay with the rocket apparatus were dispatched after shouts were heard from the cliff top. The steamer Sir William Walker and several Whitby fishing vessels stood by, but the stranded vessel was in no danger as the tide ebbed.

The tug Hendon was sent from the Tyne and the Thrift was successfully refloated and completed her journey to Blyth with out further assistance. Built by Hall, Russell and Co. Ltd of Aberdeen in 1931 at a cost of about £19,000 the Thrift was owned by the Northern Co-operative Society Ltd.
