Wreck Of The Repero
29th
December 1908
"On Tuesday morning in a
bad snow storm the Grimsby boat
"Repero" returning with
150 kit of fish went ashore at
Jetticks, one mile north of North
Cheek and about 200 yards from
the shore, where it was left by
the ebb tide. The alarm had been
given at Whitby at 7:00am when a
vessel whistle was heard out to
sea. The East side rocket brigade
left with the rocket cart,
dragging it through deep drifts
until they reached Mr Matthew
Stevensons farm where they got
three horses. Three more horses
were obtained from Mr Trattles of
Moorgate Lees, two more from Mr
Newton and two more from Hawsker
and the rocket apparatus was taken close to the
stranded vessel.
There
was a strong S.E. wind blowing
when the RHBay Lifeboat, Cox'n
William Storm was launched at 10:00am
and took off Captain John F Young
and his crew of eight, all from
Grimsby.
The
RHBay coastguard had got cliff
ladders down to the shore but
they were not needed in the
rescue. The lifeboat was washed
ashore stoving in one air tight
compartment and damaging several
others. The Lifeboat crew and the
rescued men made their way long
the beach. Chief Coastguard Beck of RHBay with
volenteers descended the ladders
and secured the Lifeboat which
was later taken back to Bay. The
trawler had her stern post
damaged but hoped to be salvaged."
