The "Lancet"
29th December
1896
Gallant
Lifeboatmen
A
plucky deed was done on Sunday by
the Robin Hood's Bay Lifeboatmen.
During the gale on Saturday night
the large brig Lancet was
disabled while on the way to
Newcastle with a cargo of
limestone. One of the sudden
squalls carried away her
mainmast, and she drifted about
in a helpless condition. At
midnight tar barrels were burned
on board and the Robin Hood's Bay
fishermen as soon as they saw the
flare, proceeded after the ship
in their lifeboat. For eighteen
miles they followed the drifting
brig until she was safely towed
into Scarborough on Sunday
afternoon. Then the gallant
lifeboatmen started on their row
long home again. No lives were
lost.
