George
and Mary's and Ann
10th
January 1857
"Since Thusday evening the
coast has been visited by a
succession of gales ranging from
S.W. to N.E. They gradually
increased in violence up to
Saturday night and Sunday morning.
At Robin Hood's
Bay two vessels are ashore. On Sunday morning
about 8am the George of Colchester, a schooner
going north in ballast, found it was impossible
to keep off shore and it was put before the
wind and reached the shore a little south
of the town. The crew remained on board until
the tide went down. At day light portions
of wreck found on the beach and a name board
were picked up, "Mary's and Ann"
of Alnmouth, a schooner subsequently transfered
to Whiby. The crew lost were Mr Michael Sneaton,
master, Thos Redman, mate and two men strangers
in Whitby"
