"G. BONNAIN, Photographe, Le Treport"

The picture above was kindly donated by Mr Ray Arnold whose father was First Mate of the vessel at the time of her stranding, and later became the Captain. In the photograph the SS Elvier is seen steaming out of Le Treport, France.

The 1400ton steam ship "Elvier" of Goole was sailing from Le Treport to the Tyne to collect a cargo when she came ashore in thick fog on Sunday morning. Chief Officer Bartleth raised the alarm and the Lifeboat was launched. There was a smooth sea with a heavy ground swell. The ships Captain refused assistance from the Lifeboat Cox'n O.Storm, except to run out kedge anchors with which the vessel was able to winch her self free. She proceeded to the Tyne under her own steam with only slight damage.

After the Lifeboat had left the slipway Mrs G Fenwick tripped over a rope and sustained a double fracture of the leg.
