SS Ben Read

6th August 1927

In dense fog late in the evening the 700ton coastal oil tanker SS Ben Read built by Charles Hill of Bristol ran ashore on Ness Point. Built for the National Benzole Company in 1923 she was capable of carrying 500 tons of light oil fractions, a by product of coal gas production, in 4 tanks.

"Mary Ann Lockwood" was launched at 23:30 to keep watch on the stranded vessel until 06:00 the following morning.

The vessel was later refloated.
