Anne
14th December
1859
The Dutch schooner "Anne"
of Delfayl came ashore at about 2
in the afternoon. Having left
Shields at two the previous day
with a cargo of coals for
Harlingen in Holland. The crew
consisting of Master and three
men, were saved by a fishing
coble, which put off under very
hazardous conditions. The Master
Johannes Japs Lodewykes reports
that four hours after leaving the
Tyne the wind changed and stormy
weather came on. The ship sprang
a leak and although the pump was
kept at work, the water gained on
them. After becoming thoroughly
exhausted the crew decided to run
on shore.
The cargo was
saved and the vessel sold by auction but will
probably become a wreck.
